Jazz Point Ibiza 2021
By Jerry Brownstein
Jazz Point Ibiza put our island on the international jazz map by bringing some of the biggest names in the business to perform here in March 2020.The 2021 edition of this annual celebration of jazz will be on October 15th and 16th at Can Ventosa in Ibiza Town. On each night there will be two different bands performing and the shows will start at 21:00. There will also be a free concert by a local band at Can Ventosa on Sunday, October 17th at 13:00. The festive mood will begin on October 14th with a musical dinner party at Pikes Ibiza (reservations only). It will feature the Muriel Grossmann Quartet with a special guest performance by Friday’s Jazz Point headliner Alice Zawadski. Once again, David Moss of the Ibiza Music Agency has worked with Joel Chriss Productions of New York to bring international jazz stars to entertain us on these very special nights.

The opening set on Friday 15/10 is the Pere Bujosa Trio from Spain, with Pere on Stand Up Bass, Joan Terol on Drums and Xavi Torres at the Piano. Pere Bujosa is originally from Mallorca, and he is a rising star in the music business. The second set on Friday features the celebrated singer and musician Alice Zawadzki from England and her trio, with Misha Mullov-Abbado on Stand Up Bass and Fred Thomas on percussions. Alice has won numerous awards as a vocalist, violinist and composer, and her group brings a sound that is genuine and unique.

On Saturday 16/10 the show will open with the famous American saxophonist Bill McHenry and his international quintet featuring Estefanía Chamorro on Drums, Masa Kamaguchi on Upright Bass, Anggie Obin on flute and Victor Carrascosa on Trumpet. Bill McHenry has been called “one of the most distinctive voices of his generation” and this group lives up to that billing. Ariel Bringuez & Nostalgia Cubana will have the crowd swaying in the second set. Ariel is an award winning saxophonist, pianist and composer. His quintet includes Pablo Gutiérrez on Piano, Israel Sandoval on Guitar, Rubén Carles on Upright Bass and Michael Olivera setting the tone on Drums.

On Saturday afternoon from 12:00 some of the star performers will be giving what are called “Master Classes” for local musicians at Can Ventosa. These will be open sessions where these musical masters will share their wealth of knowledge about jazz and the art of performing at the highest levels. On Sunday 17/10 the local nine piece band ‘Speaking Sounds’ will perform a classical jazz concert from 13:00 to 14:00 at Can Ventosa. The band is sponsored by Patronat Municipal de Música Ajuntamentd’Eivissa, and they play events throughout the year.

The organizers of Jazz Point Ibiza are dedicated to making our island an important part of the international jazz scene. Ibiza is a natural place for this, as it is in perfect synch with the essence of jazz- the freedom to create special music with spontaneous improvisation. This sounds a lot like the “people of Ibiza” who have come here for the freedom to express themselves in unconventional ways. Jazz and Ibiza - a match made in Heaven.
