Teaching about healthy food in Sant Antoni schools
By María V. R.
The municipality of Sant Antoni has created an educational program that brings the knowledge of food and farming into their schools. Together with the Association of Producers of Ecological Agriculture of Ibiza and Formentera, they have launched a project that aims to teach children about healthy food and raise awareness of the importance of organic farming. This progressive proposal will develop ecological school gardens in each of the four educational centres of the municipality. The students will learn various skills that include planting procedures, growing traditional crops, treating the soil ecologically and using water sustainably. In addition there will be regular visits to a working ecological farm to learn about the daily tasks of being a farmer, and the benefits of consuming local products. The students will also be taken on trips to the forest to study the uses and characteristics of Ibiza’s traditional natural plants and herbs.
